Utilizing the world-class AT&T WATSON speech engine, AT&T has simplified the process of voice-enabling apps. Just send us audio, and we'll send you the transcribed text of what your customers say. AT&T has accumulated more than 600 patents on the WATSON technology and has developed a service that offers fast and accurate speech transcriptions for your customers.

In the next few weeks, we'll make the Speech API available on the AT&T API Platform, and shortly after that, we'll make it even simpler to capture and send us audio for transcription by releasing our SDKs for HTML5 and native apps. So, stay tuned to the AT&T Developer Program website and check your Inboxes for announcements.

The Speech API facilitates speech-to-text transcription for virtually any mobile phone—even across all other U.S. wireless carrier services. We've tailored the Speech API to be optimized for specific speech contexts, including Web Search, Business Search, Voicemail, SMS, Question and Answer, TV, and Generic, which automatically detects English and Spanish language and returns the appropriate text transcription. Because the Speech API is part of a broader framework of APIs that cover a variety of services such as messaging, location and billing, with the AT&T API Platform we're giving developers a one-stop shop for the tools they need to build their apps and services.

Give the AT&T API Platform a try now for free! When you sign up, use the APISPCH12 promotional code to get free access to all APIs on the platform, including the Speech API when it becomes available, through 2012.

If you want to learn the basics of speech transcription in mobile apps and get ideas for how you can utilize the Speech API, then don't miss our upcoming "Speech 101" webcast on June 21 @ 10:00 AM Pacific Time.

What's New

Announcing ARO Open Source – What Can You Build?
AT&T proudly gives you the open source code for Application Resource Optimizer (ARO) and asks: What can you build?

The building blocks are all there—algorithms that measure an application's use of content, radio signal, and peripherals, as well as detailed metrics and statistics that present the information in ways that make application analysis easier. But what can you build with these blocks? Will you make them part of your testing application? Build a new native collector? Do you want to present the information in new ways? ARO Open Source code is posted on github.com. Start building now!

Miso Creates an Innovative, Interactive App Using the AT&T U-verse® Enabled SDK for iOS
Would you like to chat with your friends while watching your favorite TV shows? How cool would it be to instantly access complementary information about what you are watching, like the products that are displayed or the songs that are being played? Read about how Miso used the AT&T U-verse Enabled SDK for iOS to create this unique and innovative experience for AT&T U-verse customers. With the SDK, Miso created an app that allows users to connect a compatible device or tablet to a U-verse receiver via the in-home U-verse Wi-Fi network. They can then send remote-control commands to the receiver and get complementary information on the shows they are watching. When coupled with Miso's social app, this enabled the users to communicate with friends while having a dashboard of relevant information on their phone. Read more about Miso and how AT&T provided the tools for them to create a great app!

Tech Tips

Updating Security in the Payment API
For our newest release of the Payment API, we are incorporating additional security and usability improvements. The biggest change will follow the security improvements in the "OAuth 2.0 Authorization Protocol: Bearer Tokens" specification by moving the access token from the query string to a header. As a result, the access token will now be transmitted via the Authorization header, and you will need to incorporate this change in methodology into your application. Read the full tech tip here!

Duplicate Content
Duplicate content is a common problem with mobile apps. It results from the different ways that an app processes content on the device and on the server, and from the fact that mobile app developers can't depend on a browser to cache their content. The Best Practice recommendation is to incorporate a caching strategy into your application design and implement caching as part of your app. Learn how to do it here!
