AT&T Mobile App Hackathon - Seattle Gaming Hackathon Recap
With back to back hackathons, we came from San Francsico, just concluded Seattle this last weekend and are now headed to Los Angeles in the upcoming weekend. The Seattle hackathon was focused on gaming apps and the three day format gave developers an extra day to come up with interesting concepts and refine their code base a bit. If you were interested in pictures from the event, hit this link.
Over 150 attendees streamed through the Surf Incubator over the course of the weekend with multiple devices and lots of activity. It actually got so hot in certain sections that some of the developers put water in front of their personal fans just to keep themselves cool. If I can find a picture of this, I'll be sure to post it here. As for the total number of apps, the weekend churned out 19 applications with a number more that attempted to reach the finish line, but fell short by just a tiny bit. Of the 19 apps that crossed the finish line, there were three teams that were selected to present at the Casual Connect keynote at 9AM today.
With over $20k in cash prizes, most everyone left with something in their pocket. As great as cold hard cash is, experiential prizes are better. For the top three teams, we worked with Casual Connect to get them in front of the crowd at Casual Connect so that they could have an opportunity to either network amongst their peers or work on getting into the industry of their dreams.
I also have to give a special call out to Paul Mou, who created a very creative and interesting solution to the information overload that search engines dump on you. Essentially, his app chunks up the search engine results into more readable bites as well as injecting relevant data from Wikipedia and other sources that you would end up looking up anyhow. So our hats go off to you Paul for your curiousity and exploration, which is what hackathons are all about, no matter the theme. We will be sending you a Sierra Wireless internet puck with 6 months of service for being awesome this weekend!
Additionally, major props goes out to Aaron Patterson (@tenderlove) for creating a Ruby gem for gosphero.com over the course of the weekend. Best of all, he open sourced the code on Github. Additional props to Seaton, who runs Surf Incubator, for hosting us over the course of the weekend.
Without further delay, here is the list of winners:
SpherOgatchi - Have you ever wished your virtual pet were real? With SpherOgatchi, you can play with your virtual pet, just like a real one! It's like a Tomagatchi or Pokemon, but using a Sphereo it can walk, run, and tell you if it's happy and sad with lights, sounds, and vibration!
Wunkie - Meet your health and wellness goals by playing a game that uses your biometric data. Exercise, eat right, and stay connected in the real world and your digital pet wins compeitions and prizes. Along the way build a mint.com for your health information.
Zombie Attack - We all know that 2012 means the end of the world is coming...and the truth is because of the inevitable Zombie Apocalypse coming. Therefore, we must prepare. Future modifications will support all major mobile platforms.

M(Gro)ove - 2nd Play Alljoyn & 1st Place Mapquest - The Age of the Social DJ has arrived. Contracting traditional Dj is expensive and not effective in today's agile entertainment industry. M(Gro)ove may not be the first (and certainly won’t be the last) platform to mix the music curation and sharing aspects of DJing with the web but it certainly offers some new ideas – most pertinently the gaming aspect where users can rate each other and score points which can unlock social benefits.
MobiMon - MobiMon lets you discover new worlds of mobile monsters & compete with your friends. Collect new creatures, train and battle to become the best MobiMon champion in the world.
Cards Against Humanity - Cards Against Humanity - It's Apples to Apples with a dirty twist. Each round, players pick a white card that best matches the black category card. The judge (czar) that round votes on his favorite entry. The game is open sourced, the mobile web app is mine.
BattleNuts - 2nd Place Game Prize & 1st Place Roar Engine Prize - Battle Nuts is a casual multiplayer game in a persistent game world, where you can jump in and out at any time. It is built to be widely accessible across platforms & form factors (iOS, Android, tablets, desktops, laptops). As you play, you gain levels, can purchase items from the items you steal, and of course are hooked by achievements. All CSS3 transitions!!
