There was a lot of excitement for our second international hackathon (first in Canada), with over 100 attendees making their way to MaRS in Toronto, Ontario! The weather was great, and so were the applications that developers spent nearly two days furiously coding.
A big thank you goes out to our friends Northof41.org and Lemonade Ventures along with our sponsors, that helped make this event possible and a special thanks to TribeHR who provided assistance with SSH.
Our first hackathon in Toronto definitely did not disappoint. We started out Friday night by kicking around some excellent ideas and engaging with local developers to find out what they are passionate about. One of the most interesting ideas we saw was from The Shop Society, a group working on a SaaS platform for fashion sales associates. The service provides recommendations and allows associates to assist customers remotely, providing boutiques the opportunity to greatly expand their businesses without large expenses.
Here are all of the teams in no particular order:
Fit With Friends - 1st Place Overall, Best mHealth App, and 1st Place Tiggzi - An app using AT&T mHealth APIs that helps promote daily fitness, through friendly competition within your peer group.
Habit 28 – A mobile application focused on changing your behavior by competing with others to receive badges and rewards from sponsoring companies for completing tasks that reinforce healthy habits.
Compete Me – 2nd Place and Best Social Good App - An app focused on providing women with the opportunity to compete against their peers to improve their fitness level. Peer groups are determined by biometrics and prior fitness results.
The Shop Society – 2nd Place Tiggzi - "Yammer for retail fashion". It's SaaS platform enables sales associates to engage and create loyal clients. The personalized recommendations unifies the in-store and digital shopping experience.
Parking Right – Parking Right improves your parking experience by having garages provide live data about openings in their facilities and providing you with geomapping of their availability.
EventLink – 3rd Place Tiggzi - EventLink provides you with the opportunity to quickly find event attendees with similar interests, skills, and goals in order to make your networking experience faster, smoother, and more successful.
iPicasso - Doing art is cool but difficult. It takes time and needs tools. This app provides an easy-to-use tool to create your own new art piece in a minute that uses existing art styles and famous figures as well as your original images. You can even buy/sell the art you and other players create using virtual currency!
Just Sayin’ – Provides dating recommendations based on your Facebook social connections and holds friends accountable for providing you bad recommendations.
Rocket App – Rocket App provides you with access to accurate up to date transit data.
TorontoTalent - A social dating application.
