The August 10th, Mobile App Hackathon (Miami) was held at the UM Life Sciences and Technology Park with the bonus of some free parking! In addition, to the 160+ attendees that helped make this event a massive success we also had another 100+ developers in Latin America working remotely.
An enormous thanks goes out to ESENEM, RightSpace2meet, CVOX Group, and the senseis/mentors that helped out at the event over the course of the weekend. We saw throughout the presentations how much the attendees appreciated your hard work and the assistance you provided. It was truly amazing to see so many of the innovative pitches given at the onset brought to fruition. At the end of the weekend 19 apps were created and at least 1, Sphormos is already in market.
One of the most exciting apps at the event was Schedu.ly an application to help users stay on time by integrating real-time traffic and location data into your schedule to alert you when it is necessary to leave to make your next meeting. Schedu.ly was created by a truly impressive duo including a Python developer learning and using Erlang for the first time and someone that entered the event as a non-developer only to leave as a man well on his way to becoming a jQuery mobile expert.
However, at the end of the day there could be only one overall winner and the judges decided to award that prize to Social Ball Handling an application that causes your Sphero to dance along with music or be given commands, through Twitter, that instruct it on which color to light up and which direction to move.
Let’s take a closer look at all the stellar applications created last weekend:
Sphormos - 1st Place Sphero – Play as a ball capable of eating smaller balls of the same color. Grow bigger as you consume other balls, but watch out as larger balls will be looking to eat you! Download it here!
iRate Live - App for providing surveys on mobile devices, allowing real-time interaction.
iQueue - In order to create a flexible, cross-platform solution, we used the Bump API with iOS and Android, as well as PHP/mySQL for data management. Our framework allows a user to create an event and customize the settings to fit their needs. Rather than use a bulky paper system or email to track registered guests, our software allows a guest to use his or her device to browse invitations, confirm/decline, and then rate and comment on the event.
CaseBlurb – 1st Place ESENEM - CaseBlurb demonstrates how real-time collaboration can be integrated with the LegalFile app.
Kickback - Build an app that allows the cruise industry to leverage all the photos passengers take with their mobile devices. By giving passengers app similar in function and design to the one they are used to. Creating a promotional opportunity for the passengers and unique marketing opportunity for the Cruise line.
NightPro iPad App - Besides being able to manage your NightPro account our iPad App is easiest way to have staff members collaborate on managing the door at a nightlife event. It collects all the attendance information creating real time reports on promoter performance and at the same time it manages table availability for your venue.
Walker - This daily application sends notifications based on your interests throughout the day. It will educate, entertain and connect people via different forms of media all based on your interests.
MEDS (Mobile Emergency Dispatch System) – 1st Place Most Innovative - WMobile Emergency Dispatch System (MEDS) that allows you to harness the power of your smartphone to provide similar functionality as that of OnStar or ADT. Normally, these services are only offered through new vehicles or expensive home surveillance systems. On the flip side, MEDS allows you to to take advantage of all of these features from the convenience and accessibility of your smartphone. MEDS is designed to be used anywhere, by anyone.
Schedu.ly – 3rd Place Overall - Never be late again with Scheduly's intuitive alerts. Our mobile app updates your calendar alerts based on the location of your next appointment and your current geo-location to make sure you can account for travel time.
LPS (Local Positioning System) - Using QR code scanning technology and a pathing algorithm we can generate the shortest path to your destination without the use of GPS satellites all within a small amount of time. Vendor's would set up their venue and marker locations. We take that information and are able to map you from venue to venue effortlessly.
QRartguide - To overcome a deficiency of high quality delivery of the "back stories" behind the artworks shown in galleries, art fairs, museums and other venues, we have developed the concept and prototype for a mobile-optimized service that serves a rich variety of media via QR codes. This subscription service can be developed and operated at a low cost and generate a substantial profit margin.
Social Ball Handling – 1st Place Overall - This app is going to be the first app you'd download on your new ANDROID device. PERIOD.
Crystallize – 2nd Place Overall - Crystalize is an app that lets you catalog and distill your ideas. What makes it unique is it's the simplest way to organize and develop your ideas. It asks you a series of questions, then from your answers, it compiles a professional PDF executive summary to print and email. For a fee, you can have your idea confidentially reviewed by a business mentor. Every shared idea PDF has a small reference to our app, so users spread the word organically by using it.
SpheroMap - SpheroMap is an application for mobile devices that allows you to create blueprint measurement maps of rooms and detects the perimeter of objects to allow you to have easy autonomous access to your spaces utilizing Sphero.
BinaryBackyard - Social Bookmarking for Kids.
Travel Shopper - Travel Retail is a Global Business across 7 distribution channels. Today sales & marketing activity is highly fragmented btwn brands, retailers & consumers. I am working to offer the traveler, especially international ones, an app using Foursquare API that will help them navigate airport faster to find fun ways to spend their time, enable them to make purchases more easily, share trip experience via social media & reward loyalty with incentives. For the brands & retailers, the app will drive awareness, traffic & trial, thus increasing sales.
FORK - The idea is simple: imagine you're at a hackathon with over one-hundred people you've never met. Wouldn't it be great to know not only who they are, but what their particular skills were? We thought so – and built Fork. We quickly realized that it could be used in co-working spaces and College study-labs.
Monopoly – A monopoly parody game created on Android.
Spherbble- Spherbble provides Sphero owners a quieter, lower-maintenance, and carbon-free alternative to a carbon-based domesticated companion (pets).
