AT&T has been working hard to expose its network APIs to its developer community to enrich applications. Naturally one of the first targets for this experience was the mobile web browser. Advances in mobile web browsers, the increasing adoption of HTML5, and the capabilities within today's smart phones have turned mobile browsing from a slow, painful experience, to an one that matches the desktop or laptop. When you couple this with the features, mobility, and the ability to always be connected, this experience can go places that desktops and laptops cannot follow.
During the 2012 AT&T Developer Summit, we put a lot of focus into taking HTML5 to the next level. AT&T partnered with Sencha to advance HTML5 capabilities beyond what is available through the platforms today. Our combined efforts created the AT&T API Platform SDK for HTML5 that gives developers the ability to access our AT&T API Platform through a set of easily installable server side libraries, in ruby, Java and PHP. These APIs are then exposed through a Sencha Touch based client-side libraries to take advantage of their touch based platform. After adding your credentials to the API Platform, you can quickly start creating new web apps that can access such things as Terminal Location, SMS, MMS, and Payment APIs. We are looking at rolling out new APIs to you in the upcoming future, and we will make sure that we continue to expose these APIs through our SDK so you can start using them quickly in your web apps.
Along with our focus on putting AT&T APIs at your fingertips, we are also partnering with Sencha to expose their touch based HTML5 SDK to ease your development issues when moving from the web to the mobile web. This SDK is geared to make it easy to add touch events to your apps to make them clean, consistent and scalable to WebKit based mobile browsers. Sencha has just entered into its release candidate for Sencha Touch 2.0 RC, which is focused on optimization of the 1.0 platform.
These two SDKs, coupled with the advances in mobile browsers has made the term web apps a reality. Web developers don't have to create mere web pages, now, in the browser, and through server based APIs, a full app experience can be realized on the phone, with executable code, device features, and instant availability. We are excited to see what the mobile web app community will create.
