Developing on ATT with Android

This may be a stupid question, but here it goes...

I'm about to purchase an HTC Aria for developing apps on Android, but am concerned abut not being able to load my app on my device to test it without distributing it through the marketplace.

Is this really the case with ATT, or am I going to be able to test on my phone?

Thanks for any insight.  I'm new to phone development, so I really don't know...

Jeff,

In building an application on AT&T android phones, you have to sideload using the Android Debug Bridge (ADB).

Take a look at this Tech Tip for instructions, and if you have more questions, feel free to repost.

Hi Jeff,

If it is a stupid question, it is the same stupid question I came here to ask. It was not obvious to me that the ban on sideloading did not include ADB. I am thinking of programing for the streak at some time.

Thanks for the info, Doug.

That appears to go to a blank page.

I'm in some distress at having bought an Aria today and discovered that it's hobbled by AT&T so as not to allow installation of applications. As a developer -- and a grown-up -- I'm actually kind of stunned (as well as disgusted).

The disabling of sideloading applications is generally considered a means of malware prevention.

Re: Developing on ATT with Android

I followed the link, and look at the https://developer.att.com/developer/device_detail.jsp?id=6.3_v1_10400082  I I don't see where there is a resource link to download a driver to the phone to enable the debug bridge...

Some device drivers may be available from OEM sites

I don't know for sure if this is it, but a quick google search found this page:

Re: Developing on ATT with Android

I've used Version phone, just goto settings, Application, enable usb debug and continue...   So, I'm guessing for most phones it is that easy, just use the standard driver.  I'm using Linux...
